LAPL Summer Paid Apprenticeship (Internship)
The Los Angeles Public Library’s Diversity and Inclusion Apprenticeship
The goal of the apprenticeship program is to introduce students from diverse backgrounds to careers in librarianship. Through a paid, summer-long mentored learning project (June 7 - August 29, 2020), apprentices will be introduced to multiple facets of library life, from administration to programming to user services.
Prerequisites :
For rising high school seniors or college freshmen/sophomores/juniors
Must be 18 years of age by June 7, 2020
Possess a strong desire to pursue a career in public libraries; be good listeners; be willing to share ideas and take risks; be comfortable giving presentations; be flexible and adaptable; be enthusiastic about public service; be capable of accomplishing goals and meeting due dates; be able to work well in a team environment; and have a strong work ethic.
Computer skills and familiarity with social media are also desired.
Responsibilities Include:
Begin the apprenticeship the week of June 7th and continue until August 29st
Work one-on-one for 15 hours per week with a site supervisor/mentor to develop and implement a community-based project at the Central Library or a branch library
Share goals and interests to develop a successful apprenticeship experience
Be introduced to professional library associations and to local universities that offer Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) programs
Tour neighboring library systems
Complete scheduled rotations within LAPL regions and Central Library Departments
Spend ‘A Day with a Division Librarian
Introduce new ideas to enhance library services or programs
Spend dedicated time reflecting and writing about the apprenticeship experience
Ideal candidates will work weekdays and will not have other obligations during the summer.
Apprentices will be paid $15 per hour
