What To Know About Institutional Academic Merit-Based Grants

Institutional Academic Merit-Based Grants are “Free” money (usually) given by colleges (that goes back to themselves) based on the student’s ACADEMIC MERIT (GPA and SAT/ACT)

 
 

FACTS about Institutional Academic Merit-Based Grants

  • Lowers direct college cost. $$$$ do not REALLY change hands!!

  • Some Colleges’ “scholarships” (i.e. Western Public Colleges, SPU & GCU) are Easier to Get than from other Colleges’

    • Hardest to Get: Private Colleges – including HBCU and UCs

  • SOME times, guidelines for Academic Award are on the website; sometimes they are more subjectively based on the POOL of candidates in a given year.

  • Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Scholarships – Free Money given by CERTAIN Western PUBLIC Universities and are a way for HIGH GPA/SAT students to get VERY VERY Affordable Colleges.

  • State Schools in the WEST which are MOST popular either do not do WUE Scholarships or they are very small = ASU, UW, Washington State, University of Oregon, Oregon State, UNLV.

  • In some cases, very high (cumulative) GPAs are required to keep institutional ACADEMIC MERIT AWARDS (3.25 to 3.50) – FACTOR THAT INTO YOUR COLLEGE SELECTION!!

  • For family incomes > $60,000, MOST Private Colleges are not “affordable” without Merit Scholarships.
