A Critical Warning: New Math Policies Threaten Our Students' College Futures

Parents, I need your attention. There's something happening in our education system that deeply concerns me, and I believe it should concern you too. As the Education Enrichment Director here at West Angeles Church, I've always been committed to ensuring our students have every opportunity to succeed. But recent changes in math requirements for UC and CSU admissions are putting that success at risk.

Here's the problem:

Schools are increasingly offering statistics or data science as substitutes for Algebra 2, especially for students who struggle. Now, I understand the need for flexibility, but this approach is fundamentally flawed. Algebra 2 is the bedrock for STEM fields. Replacing it with alternatives without giving students a chance to master it is setting them up for failure.

Think about it…

What happens to a student who wants to be an engineer or a scientist, but they never truly grasped Algebra 2? They're being denied the foundation they need. And what's worse, the UC system's postponement of math validation requirements is creating a cloud of uncertainty, making it even harder for parents and students to navigate this mess.

I'm seeing a trend where students, particularly those from marginalized communities, are being steered away from challenging but essential math courses. This isn't just about numbers; it's about opportunity. It's about ensuring our students have the tools they need to build successful futures.

I'm frustrated. I'm angry. Budget cuts and political decisions are jeopardizing our children's education. But I refuse to sit back and watch this happen. That's why I'm calling on you, parents, to be vigilant. Advocate for your children. Demand that they receive the proper math education.

If your child is struggling with Algebra 2, don't let them take the easy way out. Seek additional support. After-school programs, summer courses, community college options—these are all valuable resources. Let's work together to ensure our students have every chance to succeed.

I'll be addressing this issue further in future videos. This is too important to ignore. We need to stand up for our students and fight for their future.

Thank you.
